The last EUROPEAN SLAG CONFERENCE in Thessaloniki in 2019 on the subject of ‘Slag based products – best practices for Circular Economy’ provided important information and incentives for our work. Topics such as the circular economy, sustainability, resource conservation and the extraction of secondary raw materials are increasingly gaining importance at the political level, as the ‘EU Green Deal’ or the related ‘Circular Economy Action Plan’ of the European Commission show.

The European Union has set ambitious CO₂ reduction targets to become an economy with net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The first milestone is a reduction of CO₂ emissions by 55% by 2030. The steel industry has boosted R&D to manage the transformation process to also become carbon neutral by 2050. This will result in substantially new slag types and overall with a different ‘slag mix’ in the future. One aim of the conference is to share knowledge and report on the research projects and needs to manage this transformation process when it comes to slags and the challenge to sustain the different applications of these by-products or even to develop new applications.

But we do not exclusively want to focus on the transformation. The purpose of the 11^th EUROPEAN SLAG CONFERENCE, organized by the FEhS Institute for Building Materials Research and EUROSLAG, the European Slag Association, is also to share updated knowledge, ideas and research related to technical applications and environmental and legal aspects for all kinds of iron and steel slags. The conference aims to bring together all persons involved in processing, using, and marketing slag from private companies, public authorities, research institutes, universities, technical schools and environment safety organizations.

There will be lectures, a roundtable discussion, three moderated sessions, and a speed poster presentation. We will be able to offer attractive options for the traditional site visits on the last day of the conference.
